Apple Pear Crisp

Apple Pear Crisp

Layers of tender apples and pears bake together in a brown-sugar-and-cinnamon filling, wrapped in warm fall spices and finished with a wonderfully crunchy oatmeal–pecan topping. It’s everything autumn desserts should be — comforting, fragrant, and impossible to resist.

This apple-pear crisp delivers all the flavor of a classic pie without the effort of a crust. It’s made with simple pantry staples and can be adapted to whatever apples or pears are on hand. We used Honeycrisp apples, Bartlett pears, and Better Halves Pecans – of course!

Ingredients:

Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • ¾ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup chopped Better Halves Pecans
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter (+ 2 tablespoon for greasing pan)

Filling

  • 3 medium apples, sliced
  • 3 medium pears, sliced
  • 3 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350℉. Grease bottom and corners of 3 quart baking dish or 9×13 pan with butter. Set aside.

Topping

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together all of the topping ingredients except butter. When it’s mixed well, cut in butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the topping becomes crumbly like a wet sand. Set aside.

Filling

  1. Toss apple and pear slices in lemon juice. Then add the rest of the ingredients and toss together until all of the apples are coated.
  2. Fill the bottom of your greased dish with all of the coated apples and pears. Arrange so that the dish is filled evenly. Cover the fruit evenly with the topping.
  3. Bake for 40-45 minutes in your preheated oven or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling up around its edges. Remove from the oven and let stand for 10-15 minutes before serving.
  4. Top with vanilla ice cream and Enjoy!
