Meet The Better Halves™

Call it pecans in perfect harmony! These crazy nuts have a great story…

Pete (he goes by “P”) meets Candy (she goes by “Can”) on the “shaker” after being “born” on 2 separate pecan trees on a massive orchard in the heart of Georgia pecan country. Their mutual attraction was instant, and they vowed that their “2 quality halves” would forever make the “perfect whole” and they would always be a ”complete nut.”

is it pronounced or...

People go “nuts” over this debate!

A poll conducted by the National Pecan Shellers Association asked Americans how they say it:

A whopping 45% of Southerners say “PEE-can,” while nearly 70% of those living in the Northeast do, too. And, though survey results on the topic have varied vastly, they found that “PEE-can” was the preferred pronunciation among 45%of Americans.

The other 55% were split between “puh-KAHN” and “PEE-kahn”—an interesting hybrid of the two.

So, the survey proved that “PEE-can” makes a very strong showing, at least on the East Coast.

Alexander Ott, Executive Director of the American Pecan Council, offers this explanation for why Americans pronounce “pecan” differently: because pecans themselves are “grown in so many different places—15 states from coast to coast”.

And is one pecan pronunciation “right”?

Not according to the APC.

“Any and all pronunciations are welcome as long as the pecans are being eaten!” Ott says.

Clearly some people want to have their pecan pie and eat it too.

Did You Know...

…that the pecan is the only major tree nut that grows naturally in North America?

The name ‘pecan’ actually comes from the Algonquian language, specifically from the Illinois word “pakan” or the Algonquin word “paccan,” which means “nut that requires a stone to crack.

While other nuts come from around the world, the pecan is uniquely native to the USA, having thrived here for thousands of years.

Pecans can truly be considered America’s Nut!

Among the states, Georgia takes the lead as the leading producer of pecans. Georgian farmers send more than 100 million pounds of pecans to buyers and food manufacturers around the globe.
