How to know if you have FRESH pecans

Knowing the difference between a fresh and “not so fresh” pecan is good info to know if you love this wonderful nut.

At Better Halves Pecans, we only sell directly to you to ensure the freshest pecan possible. Sometimes, you never know how long store-bought pecans have been on the shelf and the same goes for third-party sellers.

Here is a checklist so you “know your nut”:

  • Color: Fresh pecans generally have a golden-brown color. Stale pecans might appear darker and might even have spots of discoloration.
  • Shine: Fresh pecans often have a natural sheen or shine to their surface. Stale ones might appear dull or lackluster.
  • Feel: Gently squeeze the pecan between your fingers. Fresh pecans should feel firm and slightly pliable. Stale pecans might feel overly dry, brittle, or even mushy.
  • Crunchiness: Break a pecan in half. Fresh pecans should snap cleanly. Stale ones might crumble or break unevenly.
  • Aroma: Fresh pecans should have a mild, nutty aroma. Stale pecans might have a rancid or off-putting smell.
  • Flavor: Taste a small piece of the pecan. Fresh pecans have a rich, buttery flavor with a slight sweetness. Stale ones might taste bland, bitter, or sour.
