At Better Halves Pecans, we take pride in delivering fresh, orchard-grown pecans straight from our trees to your table. And because pecans are naturally rich in heart-healthy oils, keeping them fresh takes just a bit of know-how.
Whether you’re saving a handful for baking next week or stocking up for the holidays, the right storage method helps preserve that buttery flavor and crisp texture you love.
Here’s our guide to keeping your pecans fresh and delicious—just the way we grow them.
The Basics of Freshness
Pecans are best stored cold and airtight. Their natural oils can turn rancid over time when exposed to heat, air, or moisture. To lock in freshness:
❤️ Always use an airtight container (glass jar with a tight lid, resealable bag, or vacuum-sealed pouch).
❤️ Keep them cool and dry, away from sunlight and heat sources.
❤️ Avoid strong odors. Pecans easily absorb the scents of nearby foods like onions, garlic, or spices.
With those three simple rules, you’re already halfway to perfect storage.

Short-Term Storage (1–2 Weeks)
If you’re planning to enjoy your pecans soon, the pantry will do just fine—as long as it’s cool, dark, and dry.
❤️ Use an airtight container and keep it away from your oven or any warm spots.
❤️ Store them away from strong-smelling foods.
Shelled pecans can stay fresh for a few weeks; pecans in their shells may last even longer.

Medium-Term Storage (Up to 9 Months)
For anything beyond a couple of weeks, move your pecans to the refrigerator. This slows oxidation and extends their shelf life significantly.
❤️ Shelled pecans: Store in an airtight container or glass jar for up to 9 months.
❤️ In-shell pecans: Can stay fresh in the fridge for up to 18 months.
Pro tip: Keep your pecans on a middle or lower shelf—temperatures are steadier there.

Long-Term Storage (Up to 2 Years)
When you really want to preserve your pecans for the long haul, the freezer is your best friend.
❤️ Shelled pecans: Store in heavy-duty freezer bags or airtight freezer-safe containers. Remove as much air as possible before sealing. They’ll keep for up to 2 years.
❤️ In-shell pecans: Can be frozen for up to 3 years.
You can use frozen pecans directly in recipes—no thawing necessary!
How to Tell If Pecans Have Gone Bad
Trust your senses:
- Smell: Fresh pecans smell mild and nutty. Rancid ones have a sour, bitter, or paint-like odor.
- Taste: If they taste bitter or sharp instead of buttery and sweet, it’s time to toss them.
- Appearance: Discoloration, mold, or shriveled kernels are clear signs of spoilage.
- Texture: Fresh pecans are crisp and firm—soft or rubbery ones are past their prime.
Can You Refresh Stale Pecans?
If your pecans have lost a little crunch but don’t smell rancid, they may just be stale. Spread them on a baking sheet and toast at 300°F for about 10 minutes. This simple trick revives both flavor and texture—especially helpful before baking or topping salads.
